Yellow Nutsedge can be a menace to all lawn enthusiasts. In fact, almost every yard will get it. In this episode I test 4 different products to see which products works best at killing the dreadful weed.
Yellow nutsedge is a perennial weed so it will come back every year, if untreated.
What is Yellow Nutsedge?
Below is a little information from Perdue.
Yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus), also known as chufa (chufa is a non-weedy variety that is used for wildlife food plots and is not a cold hardy weed like yellow nutsedge), nutgrass, or watergrass, is a troublesome, difficult-to-control perennial weed found throughout the United States. It is important to understand that yellow nutsedge is not a grass or a broadleaf weed, but a sedge; which is crucial when determining effective control strategies. It establishes by rhizomes, which form tubers (called nutlets) that are capable of surviving in the soil for periods of up to ten years. These nutlets, as well as viable seed, sprout and establish from May until the end of July. The ability of nutlets to survive long periods in the soil and the mature plant to withstand frequent, low mowing practices, make yellow nutsedge a difficult-to-control weed in turf.

Sedgehammer+
Active Ingredient: Halosulfuron-methyl 5%
Mix Ratio: Mix 1 packet in 1 gallon of water to cover 1000 sq. ft. I mixed a 32 oz. spray bottle with 3.375g of product in 32 oz. of water.
Result: Probably the best in the 2 week trial period. It really yellowed and appeared to kill the nutsedge without harming the Bermuda grass.
Spectracide Weed Stop
Active Ingredient: 2,4-D, dimethylamine salt – 0.253% Quinclorac – 0.121% Dicamba, dimethylamine salt – 0.029% Sulfentrazone – 0.015%
Mix Ratio: Already mixed, just apply.
Result: Killed the nutsedge the fastest, but really damaged the surrounding Bermuda grass.

Active Ingredient: Ammonium salt of imazaquin – 3.3%
Mix Ratio: Mix 2.5 fl. oz in 1 gallon of water to cover 1000 sq. ft.for spot treating I mixed a 32 oz. spray bottle with 15ml of product in 32 oz. of water.
Result: One of the slowest at killing the nutsedge and also slightly damaged the surrounding Bermuda grass.
Certainty
Active Ingredient: Sulfosulfuron – 75%
Mix Ratio: Mix 3-5 small scoops in 2 gallon of water to cover 1000 sq. ft.for spot treating. I mixed a 32 oz. spray bottle with 1 small scoop (.16g) of product in 32 oz. of water.
Result: A proven winner at sedges was a bit slow, but did not damage the surrounding Bermuda grass.
